A Surpising Playmate

It’s quite amazing – I actually managed to warp my loom for the first time without any instruction, this is a minor miracle as far as I am concerned. With the pattern chosen, warp set the weaving has begun, which is going well so far and using the floof from Jester (which is dark, fine and incredibly soft) this gives a very different scarf to my first one. I am looking forward to finishing it and seeing and feeling the full effect once off the loom.

In the meantime, little Fuego is doing incredibly well, she is a bit of a lunatic, she has also made an interesting choice for playmate. As a general rule mums don’t play with their cria, they are so focused on eating enough to be able to keep themselves in good condition to be able to feed their cria they don’t have the time or energy for play. Last year Inti chose Reeya (granny) as official playmate, although Inti seemed to prefer ear munching and general body barging. Fuego on the other hand has taken after her mother and absolutely adores charging round the paddock at breakneck speed, Coca used to do this when she was a cria and used to leave poor Cusco eating her dust.

Anyway, Fuego has decided that Imogen is her favourite playmate, and the normally grumpy Imogen has risen to the challenge and is lovely with Fuego. So far, I have watched Imogen play running games, she has been showing Fuego how to have a dust bath, will allow Fuego to chew on her ear & generally be a real pain and Imogen will tolerate it all.

Imogen is also the one she will hide behind when not sure about something, I am very surprised but equally delighted to see this side of Imogen – I might even stop calling her “grumpy cow”.

The one game Imogen didn’t join in with though is the first day it started raining. Fuego hadn’t seen any rain in her life up until this point and so when it did start raining, all the adults disappeared into the field shelter and little Fuego started pronking round the paddock – I would just like to say that she is now bored with the wet stuff and always manages to get prime position in the shelter whenever it rains.

I also need to send a big thank you out to my apple and pear providers – I have some lovely neighbours who collected up all their windfalls, filled up a wheel barrow and wheeled them about 1km up hill & through bogs – this was an amazing effort and all they got in return was the joy of seeing the alpaca go nuts for apples and pears and a wheelbarrow full of alpaca poo for the garden for the return journey.
